**San Francisco Fire Department Highlights Black History Month with EMS Milestone Recognition**

The San Francisco Fire Department is celebrating Black History Month by sharing a significant story in EMS history involving the #freedomhouseambulanceservice. The department's post highlights the founding and impact of this groundbreaking service.

The Freedom House Ambulance Service was established in 1967 in Pittsburgh’s predominantly Black Hill District. It became the first EMS ambulance service in the United States and played a pivotal role in training individuals with no prior experience to become paramedics, setting the foundation for modern EMS practices.

Despite its innovative approach and vital service, Freedom House faced significant challenges. There was reluctance from White patients to receive medical treatment from Black paramedics, with some refusing care altogether. Despite this resistance, Freedom House continued its mission, providing critical emergency medical care and training new paramedics throughout the Hill District and the greater City of Pittsburgh.

The San Francisco Fire Department encourages people to learn more about the impactful legacy of the #freedomhouseambulanceservice at resources such as the EMS Museum, WQED, and the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh (@emsmuseum @wqed @hslspitt).
