Ancient Footprints Reveal Human Relatives Coexisted
Staff Report / DClocal.org
Fossil footprints dating back approximately 1.5 million years were discovered in northern Kenya in 2021. These footprints provide evidence that two different ancient human relatives, Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei, lived during the same time period and shared the same environment.
The research was led by Kevin Hatala, an associate professor of biology at Chatham University in Pittsburgh. Contributions also came from Kay Behrensmeyer, a senior research geologist and curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. The findings have been published in a recent paper.
