Tribute to Music Professor Vernon Wicker
Staff Report /
Vernon Wicker, professor emeritus of music at Seattle Pacific University (SPU), passed away on October 21, 2024, at the age of 87. Wicker retired from SPU in 2002 after more than 25 years in the Music Department.
In recognition of his contributions, he was honored during a 1999 President’s Chapel for his 20 years of service to the university. Wicker was celebrated as a scholar with a rich baritone voice, known for performing concerts in Europe, as well as at Dartmouth College, Notre Dame University, and St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh.
Notably, the contemporary Czech composer Petr Eben created music for Wicker and German organist Peter Stradmuller, which was performed during the 750th anniversary celebrations of the city of Kempen, Germany. Wicker was the editor-in-chief of "Hymnology Annual: An International Forum on the Hymn and Worship" and was proficient in singing in nine languages. He also provided English translations of Baroque cantatas and Bach arias. Colleagues and students recognized him for his warm faith and supportive nature.
